At Cruz del Cóndor, 3,400 metres above sea level, we witness one of the planet's most breathtaking natural phenomena.

At Cruz del Cóndor, 3,400 metres above sea level, one of the planet's most breathtaking natural phenomena unfolds in complete silence. The Andean condor — with a wingspan reaching 3.3 metres and weighing up to 15 kilograms — rises on thermal currents from the valley floor of the Colca Canyon, passing within arm's reach of those fortunate enough to be there.

The condor (Vultur gryphus) is the world's largest flying bird by combined weight and wingspan. In Andean cosmology, it is a sacred messenger between the human world and the realm of the gods — the Apu, or mountain spirits. To see one in flight is, for many, a profoundly spiritual experience, regardless of one's beliefs.

Colca Canyon itself is one of the world's deepest gorges, reaching 3,270 metres at its deepest point — more than twice the depth of the Grand Canyon. The canyon cuts through terraces built by pre-Inca cultures 2,000 years ago, and these terraces, still farmed today, create a landscape of extraordinary geometric beauty.

The best viewing hours are between 09:00 and 10:30, when thermal columns rise from the canyon floor as the sun warms the dark rock. On a good morning, dozens of condors can be seen simultaneously, riding the thermals in long, lazy circles. By midday, they disperse across the canyon in search of carrion.

The two-day route from Arequipa via Chivay is the standard approach. Overnight in Chivay or Yanque allows you to acclimatise before the 04:00 departure to Cruz del Cóndor. An Echoes of the Andes private guide will position you in the optimal location and provide context on condor behaviour and Collagua culture.
